How to Maintain a Hydraulic Pump: A Practical Guide

Hydraulic pump failure rarely happens without warning, and in most cases, it’s preventable. A few straightforward maintenance habits can add years to the life of your pump, save you significant repair costs, and keep your equipment running when you need it most. Whether you’re a farmer, contractor, or engineer, this guide covers the essentials of hydraulic pump maintenance in plain terms.


Check Your Hydraulic Oil Regularly 

Your hydraulic oil does more than lubricate, it transmits power, removes heat and protects internal components from wear. When it degrades or becomes contaminated, your pumps pays the price.


Check your oil level and condition at least every 250 hours of operation, or at the start of each season. When checking:


  • Look of cloudiness or milky appearance, which indicates water contamination.

  • Check for dark, burnt colour which suggests the oil has overheated or oxidised.

  • Look for metallic particles in the oil, which can indicate internal wear.

  • Make sure you’re using the correct grade, the wrong viscosity puts unnecessary strain on seals and internal components.


If in doubt, change it. The cost of an oil change can be a fraction of the cost of a pump rebuild.


Keep Your Filters Clean and Change Them on Schedule 

Contamination is the single biggest cause of hydraulic pump failure in the field. Particles as small as 10 microns, invisible to the naked eye, can score the precision surfaces inside your pump, causing accelerated wear and eventual failure.


Your hydraulic filter is the first line of defence. Change it according to your manufacturer’s schedule, and don’t stretch the intervals. A blocked or bypassing filter stops doing its job entirely, leaving your pump exposed.


Signs your filter may need attention:


  • Sluggish system response 

  • Increased operating temperatures

  • A filter indicator showing bypass (if your system has one)


It’s also worth checking your reservoir breather cap and keeping your fill point clean, contamination often enters the system during routine top-ups.


Inspect Hoses and Fittings Regularly 

A worn or failing hose doesn’t just leak, it affects system pressure, puts additional strain on your pump, and can cause sudden failures at the worst possible moment.


Get into the habit of visually inspecting your hoses every few months, and particularly before heavy seasonal use. Look for:


  • Cracking, bulging, or abrasion on the outer cover

  • Weeping or dampness around fittings

  • Any signs of kinking or tight bends that restrict flow

Spot the Early Warning Signs of Pump Failure 

Catching a developing fault early is the difference between a minor repair and a full pump replacement. If you notice any of the following, don’t ignore them:


Unusual noise - A whining, knocking, or cavitation noise from your pump is never normal. Cavitation (where air enters the fluid) is particularly damaging and will destroy a pump quickly if not addressed.


Slow or weak cylinder movement - If your rams are moving slower than usual or struggling under load, reduced pump output is a likely cause.


Overheating - A system running hotter than normal suggests either a pressure problem, a fluid problem, or internal bypassing within the pump.


Pressure fluctuations - Inconsistent pressure readings or erratic system behaviour often point to internal wear on the pump’s rotating group or pressure relief valve issues.
