How to Choose the Right Size Pond Pump

Picking the right pump is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your pond, and it's also one of the easiest to get wrong. Too small and your pump won't keep the water moving or filtered properly, which can lead to poor water quality and build-up of debris. Too big and you're wasting energy, and in some cases creating a current that's too strong for your fish and plants. Getting the size right from the start saves you money, saves you hassle, and keeps your pond healthier for longer.
Here's how to work out what size pond pump you actually need.
Start With Your Pond's Volume
Before anything else, you need to know how much water you're working with. To get a rough volume for a rectangular pond, multiply length by width by average depth, then multiply by 1000 to convert cubic metres to litres. For irregular shapes, it's worth measuring a few different sections and adding them together, or using an online pond volume calculator to get a closer estimate.
This number is the starting point for everything else, so it's worth taking the time to get it right rather than guessing. A pump that's sized off a rough guess rather than an actual calculation is one of the most common reasons ponds end up under or over-pumped.
Work Out Your Turnover Rate
Once you know your pond's volume, you need to think about turnover rate, which is how many times per hour your pump moves the entire volume of water through the system. As a general rule, most ponds benefit from turning over their full volume at least once every one to two hours. So if you've got a 2,000L pond, you're looking at a pump rated somewhere around 1,000 to 2,000L per hour as a starting point.
Koi ponds usually need a faster turnover than ornamental ponds, often once an hour or even more, since koi produce more waste and need cleaner, more oxygenated water to stay healthy. If you're running a wildlife pond with a lighter fish load, you can usually get away with a slower turnover rate. A pond with a lot of plants also tends to need less turnover than a heavily stocked fish pond, since plants help naturally filter the water.
Factor in Flow Loss From Pipework and Features
The flow rate on the box isn't always what you'll actually get once the pump is installed. Every bend in your pipework, every metre of pipe run, and every extra foot of height the water needs to be pushed up (known as head height) reduces your actual flow rate. If you're running a waterfall or fountain on top of your filtration, that adds further demand on the pump, since it now has to lift water higher and push it further than a straightforward filter loop.
As a rough guide, it's worth choosing a pump rated somewhat higher than your calculated minimum to account for the loss, rather than cutting it fine and ending up with weaker flow than you need. Most manufacturers include a flow chart showing how output drops off at different head heights, which is worth checking against your own setup before you buy.
Think About What Else the Pump Needs to Power
If your pump is also running a UV clarifier or a separate filter box, you need to check the manufacturer's recommended flow rate for those too. Running a UV clarifier with too little flow reduces how effectively it treats the water, and running it with too much flow means the water passes through too quickly for the UV to do its job. Matching pump output to your filter and UV unit's requirements is just as important as matching it to your pond volume.
Submersible or External Pump?
Submersible pumps sit inside the pond and are generally easier to install and better suited to smaller ponds. External pumps sit outside the pond, tend to be more energy efficient, and are usually the better choice for larger ponds or ones with a heavier fish load, since they typically offer higher flow rates and are easier to service without disturbing the pond itself.
Signs Your Pump Might be the Wrong Size
If you're not sure whether your current pump is up to the job, there are a few tells to look out for. Cloudy or green water that doesn't clear up despite regular filter cleaning can be a sign the pump isn't turning the water over fast enough. Debris settling on the pond floor rather than being carried to the filter is another common sign of a pump that's undersized for the volume it's working with. On the other hand, if your fish seem to be struggling to swim comfortably or are constantly gathering in sheltered spots away from the main flow, that can be a sign the pump is too powerful for the pond as it's set up.
When in Doubt, Size Up Slightly
Pumps lose a bit of efficiency over time as they pick up debris and general wear, so a pump that's sized exactly to your minimum requirement today might be under performing within a year or two. Choosing a pump with a bit of headroom above your calculated needs gives you a buffer and means you're less likely to need a replacement sooner than expected.
